What Is an ATS?

An Applicant Tracking System is software used by 99% of Fortune 500 companies to filter resumes before a human ever sees them. It scans for keywords, formatting, and relevance to rank candidates automatically.

01
Parsing
ATS extracts text from your resume, stripping all formatting. If it can't read your content, you're rejected instantly.
02
Keyword Matching
The system compares your extracted text against the job description, scoring every keyword match.
03
Ranking
Candidates are scored and ranked. Usually only the top 20–30% advance to human review.
04
Screening
Recruiters review the shortlist. A well-optimized resume that cleared ATS now needs to impress a human.

ATS Do's and Don'ts

DO These Things
Use standard section headers: Experience, Education, Skills
Match keywords exactly from the job description
Use a clean single-column layout for best compatibility
Submit as PDF (unless .docx is explicitly requested)
Include both spelled-out and abbreviated terms: 'Artificial Intelligence (AI)'
Use the same job title as the listing if it honestly matches
AVOID These Things
Use tables, text boxes, or multi-column layouts
Put contact info in headers/footers — ATS often ignores them
Use images, icons, or infographic elements
Add fancy fonts, colored text blocks, or borders
Use abbreviations alone without spelling them out first
Submit with a generic filename like 'resume.pdf'

Keyword Strategy That Works

1
Copy the job description: Paste the full text into a word frequency tool to find the top 10–15 keywords.
2
Identify must-have vs. nice-to-have: Required qualifications get more ATS weight. Prioritize those keywords.
3
Mirror exact language: If they say 'project management', use that exact phrase — not 'managing projects'.
4
Distribute naturally: Place keywords across your summary, experience bullets, and skills section.
